Spring forward: fall back… it’s that time of year. Depending on which hemisphere and country you live in, you are likely to set your clocks either ahead or back one hour.
To conserve energy or take advantage of longer stretches of natural daylight (for work or play), humans have chosen to manipulate time.
Both the American inventor Benjamin Franklin and the English gentleman, William Willet are credited with originating the concept of “daylight saving time.” In 1916 Germany was the first country to apply it … in a wartime effort to conserve electricity.
The fact remains; regardless of when you start your day or how you set your clock there are still 24 hours with which to work/play. And you get to decide what to do with them!
So, what other strategies can use to save time, conserve resources and multiply success?
1.Prioritize and commit! Put the big rocks in first! As Stephen Covey urged in 7 Habits, make the non urgent but most important things your highest priority and schedule time them. These actions have the biggest impact on whether your most significant values, goals and long-term vision are realized.
2.Slow down to speed up! Carve out 30-60 minutes at the start of your day, your Power Hour, to engage all of your intelligences: mental, physical, emotional and intuitive. Set your intention for solutions, innovations and to achieve your goals for today and the next 30 days. Get physical; walk, run, hike, bike, or rebound and let your conscious and subconscious resources work on handling your requests. As soon as you’re done make notes of the ideas that emerged.
3.Decide and act! Time is best manipulated through directed focus, speed and efficiency. Review the ideas that emerged from your power hour and decide what you can immediately put into play. Determine whose help you may need to enlist and get it done.
4.Work with your natural rhythm/style! When and where are you most creative, most productive? Plan your schedule and block time for specific activities to correspond with your natural strengths.
5.Wake up & shake up! Whenever focus and concentration dips or your energy drops (usually every 90 minutes) take 15-second breath break. Stand up, shake your body out, head up, shoulders back and take 7 deep, belly (diaphragm) breaths. With clear focus and more energy your work will be easier and you’ll be far more efficient.
The Precious 24 is yours each day! How you employ them will dramatically impact the quality, quantity and speed of your success.
